Happy "Womens day"

During my extensive GD/ PI session , I met a lady named Manisha who was one of our HR faculty. My meeting with her became more intersting because she was also passionate about social service. She used to work for UNICEF for commercial sex workers in Kolkata.
"Commercial Sex Workers"-- this term sounded so cliched to me. I thought their heart-breaking stories were only limited to reel life. But thanks to ma'am, she exposed me to the hard reality by describing about a red light area in Kolkata.
"Around 30-40 girls, nearly 14 to 15 yrs of age, live together in a small single room. They have bunkers lined up till the roof and a small area beneath their bunkers serves as their bathroom. They serve their clients in their bunkers itself, for 100-200rs. And the client generally prefers a virgin because it is a myth that he wud get rid of his sexual sorder on an encounter with a young female."

At an age, when we didn't even know what prostitution was all abt, in a room which is smaller than our usual bedrooms, for an amount which we would just blast away in an evening, these girls have to sell their body, their souls and their lives.

At an age, when all of us were busy with our rat race for marks, when all of us were blushing in our early crushes, when all of us were happy in our mom's cuddles, when all of us were still realising what life was all about, at this tender adolscent age, these girls are exploited to their best. Their bodies are plundered by some depraved beasts, their young spirits are ripped off by the lust of the evil, their lives are sold away by the greedy, their tears go unnoticed in the darkness of their lives, their beauty is burnt away in the raunchy desires of the society.

And the irony being, when caught by the police, these girls are termed as "culprits" and their clients as "victims".

This coming saturday is the so called " Women's Day". While women are being tortured by evils like prostitution, molestation, child sexual abuse, dowry murders, female infanticides and many more. our politicians and socialites are talking of Women Empowerment..!

After 60 years of independence, this is the condition of a woman in Indian society and the only thing that haunts my mind is
" Is it a mistake to be born as a girl ..?"

Wake up people.. Its high time!

U stressed too much on the way they are being handled. If u might have included their feeling in then it might have been much better :).

work appreciated...it is really a gud post...but y only gals..??
it is not only gals...its children..

if u r mentionin abt the sex workers above 18 r wateva...they wanna earn money to live...recent surveys says that if there r no sex workers the crime rate wud increase..so ...
i don kno ..this wud b a comment or a fight against u...
i wish u will accept it n read the comment..
i wud lyk to say few words...
commercial sex workers..(to stop it u need to stop child labour )..wch never happens...
fightin with ya went thru many articles...wud lyk to say few lines..

An estimated 246 million children are engaged in child labour. Of those, almost three-quarters work in hazardous situations or conditions, such as working in mines, working with chemicals and pesticides in agriculture or working with dangerous machinery. They are everywhere but invisible.

Millions of girls work as domestic servants(wch include sex workers) and unpaid household help and are especially vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Millions of others work under horrific circumstances. They may be trafficked, forced into debt bondage or other forms of slavery, some are into prostitution and pornography

However, the point i wanna say is..your post wch is a small number in the child labour...
need to change a lot...to change lot u need money ...education..no caste feeling..
so nothin gonna change..

happy womens day karthi...

hey... nice sentimental stuff..
The way you have presented your thoughts is good; Its very controversial topic and slight carelessness would have made it kind of disgusting..

but i loved it as i went through.
I accept with most of your views but still feel it would have been a better post if you have generalized it. It might have been your views on society exploiting innocent people rather than making it as directly to woman.

at certain points it looked like the old boy vs girl kind of war and you could have avoided it.

you have said society has exploited the children and dont forget women are also integral part of that society

my personal feeling is things are getting better and ten years from here women will have complete freedom. its just my opinion

GREAT post all together

so true...so touching....even after 60yrs of independence, women are considered nothing more than a machine to satisfy the sexual desires of men....little do they understand that even women have a heart...feelings and an identity on this earth...
i dont know how far we can get rid of prostitution(p.s:there are women who enjoy their job),molestation and child abuse but dowry n female foeticide can be stopped almost completely...atleast by the near future...
anyway it was a thoughtful post!...cheers!:)

hi teja ....
its nice to see u comin out wth such a matured idea....
nice to see u ...raising such an issue and spreadin it to every one....
i really appreciate ur efforts...BUT...
while i was readin.i was eagerly waiting for a remedial conclusion..
an answer rather..
se every one can raise issues and every one can poin out too..
u r pointing out the politicians and im pointing out u
.........
but its high time we find a solution for it.....
as EVERY PROBLEM HAS A SOLUTION.......lets wrk for a solution...
make it and try to implement it...
In billion ppl if jus N ppl are being...iltreated or plundered..
we cant stop celebratin WOMEN'S DAY..women hav been comin up in all sectors.
and yes women empowerment shuld be considered...
.yes i strongly accept that politicians....ignore many topics.and issues .but
its not politicians who can change .its we who hav to cahnge ourselves.
theres no point in politicias makin laws and we dont folow them
se the last sentence..." Is it a mistake to be born as a girl ..?"
might hav been as a result of the total frustration in ur mind.......
but i didnt expect tht question frm u .....
u were talkin abt some vicims and u suddenly generalized the topic.like
"""After 60 years of independence, this is [da condition of a woman] in Indian
society..""""
there are manyreasons behind everything.....and also the
facts we see r really stunnin..lets hope for a better wrld..and make solutions besides pointing out others.

neways ur attempt was gud...
and allt he best........

@krishna..
dude u can make it a better world.. by working for such ppl thru ngo's ... or least of all by standing against any injustice tats been done to woman in da society around u..

@ sss
i do agree with u tat some of da women r also involved in this issue.. but da ratio of men to women in this kinda corruption is pretty high... im not biased towards women.. but yes wateva may b da case its da grl who takes it all in da end .. face da fact!

@ kartik..
"is it mistake being born as a grl..?" .. this line doesnt show my weakness kartik.. it only shows da hypocrisy of da present society.. yes i do agree tat things hav changed in urban areas.. but beleive me villages is still a male dominant society where women r exploited to their best.. nd comin to da solution yes.. we ca change by joining certain ngo's like mam did nd i am doin such things.. this post is for those ppl who belive they hav no responsibility towards da society..who don give a dam bat others..its a wake up cal for those kind!

Firstly for me..Women's day in itself is a sexist act since something as blessed and beautiful as womenhood is to be celebrated al arnd the year and not juss pin-pointed and bght down to 24 hours.
Now the blog must say well written, luv the comparisns u made between the normal urban girls lyfe and poor souls stuck in this mess of a society. What i wld lke 2 mention here and bring out to fellow readers is the point whch u very mildly made but what stands to me as the most vital issue to be dealt with and it's that of how the law has made clauses for such an act and it's framework. As u very rightfuly said that whn caught the gurls are claimed to b culprits and the clients are victims..Today,Even if we are to forget that we hve the 6o years of indpndnce and the fact tht the current presdnt of india is a female and fact that we have newspapers filld wth success stories of women across the world and not juss india .. isn't it a shame tht a young urban educated civilian gurl of times like 2day thinks it's a mistake been born as a gurl. Now consider the poor gurls who undergo this misery .. do they ever c a ray of hope in their lives ?!

I REST MY POINT..

Rohith said...

Just fumbled upon your blog... Nice views. Btw this comment, actually, is to answer maniche's question: why women's day?

@maniche
In this i-care-only-about-myself world of ours, we don't generally care to observe such atrocities against women. This day, though started for political purposes, might help in letting the unknown know about the harsh reality which might result in more people fighting this problem.

Did I make myself clear?

frst of al thnk u fr commentn in my blog .. appreciate tht..
as fr understandn ur point .. wel letz nt gt in details of y the day came in2 exsistnce in frst plce .. it was plainly my view 2wrds sch a day nd ur point tht such a day helps in brngin 2 notice the hardships faced by women might b true but thn don't u thnk it fails in cmpltly sufficn wth the problm..
also 2 add .. itz juss my opinion nd i never claim it 2 b right under any given circumstnce..

@ maniche..

i think its not me who contradicted to ur point whether to hav womens day or not.. plz see clearly.. its rohit..
nd lets not deviate frm da main point i wanted to convey--"prostitution" ..

Hope there will be a day when woman reminds men of a lot more things besides pleasure. A day when characterless bastards realise paying a woman for her body is exploiting her very existence!

Was great but wat do we do except pittying tem ... instead of framing touching stories lets take tem up and face the truth...nd look forward to vanish these evils in pursuit of developing a cleaner world... !! if ur doing something for them let me know it wud b great to join ur campaign

Avani said...

that is so true..

the state of women in this country is so bad.

It's very weird.. on one hand we worry about the petty things in life, and on the other girls have to sell their soul and heart to get the bare minimum of life.
